Let’s talk about what we are using! for this simple gin cocktail!
Fresh Blackberries – frozen blackberries will also work great
Dry Gin
Rosemary Simple Syrup – I love using a rosemary syrup because it highlights the earthy gin flavors. You could also use a honey simple syrup or even plain simple syrup. We are also using more syrup than normal to balance the tartness of the berries.
Lemon Juice – fresh lemon juice is best
Garnishes as Desired – a lemon twist or lemon slice, fresh blackberries, and/or herbs such as rosemary or mint.
Homemade simple syrup is very easy to make! Just heat a 1:1 ratio of water and sugar until dissolved and then let it cool.
How Does This Differ from a Classic Bramble Cocktail?
A classic bramble cocktail uses a French blackberry liqueur instead of fresh berries and a little less simple syrup since the liqueur is sweeter than fresh berries.
Traditionally, a drizzle of crème de mûre liqueur is added on top of the other ingredients that have been added to the bottom of the glass with ice cubes.
Making the Cocktail
In a cocktail shaker or mixing glass, add the gin, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup with the blackberries.
Muddle the blackberries to release their juices and flavor. You can use a muddler or the back of a spoon for this.
Add a scoop of ice and shake until very cold, approximately 30 seconds.
Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. (Traditionally crushed ice is used).
Garnish as desired with fresh blackberries, slice of lemon, and/or a rosemary sprig.
