Why You Will Love This Recipe

Rotten Apple Halloween Jello Shots are a popular and creative Halloween-themed treat that combines the fun of Jello shots with the spooky spirit of the holiday.

Ingredients

You can find more specifics on the ingredient quantities and process below in the recipe card.

Green Sour Apple Jello: Sour Apple gelatin is best for its vibrant color, resembling a “rotten” apple and flavor. You could also use lime if desired but you lose the apple taste.

If you cannot find or do not use the Sonic Sour Apple Gelatin, you can use any other variety as desired. You will miss out on the apple flavor but it will still look great!

The quantity of water needed can vary with each brand and size of gelatin, so if using a different package, swap out half of the cold water for the vodka. Leave the same amount of boiling water.

Caramel-Flavored Vodka: This adds a caramel flavor to the shots and complements the apple theme.

Gummy Worms: These are a crucial element for the “Rotten Apple” effect. They resemble worms crawling through the green apple-flavored Jello.

Water: To dissolve the Jello.

Overview

I like to use the Sonic Sour Apple Gelatin for this recipe as it is perfect for the flavor we want!

Melt your gelatin powder with the boiling water.

Mix the warm gelatin with the caramel vodka and cold water mixture, pour, and chill until set.

These Jello shots are perfect made and served in the classic small plastic cups.

You can insert the worms about 30-45 minutes after you put the gelatin in the refrigerator as it is starting to thicken, which will help hold them in place.

But the worms do get very soft if put in the Jello this far in advance. Alternatively, you can push them in when ready to serve. It is up to you!

Chill until fully set and ready to serve.

The shots are best within 24 hours, but can last up to 3 days. If the worms are in the shots, they will continue to get softer over time.

How to Make Jello Shots Without Alcohol

If you want to make these Jello Shots without alcohol as a virgin option, simply substitute the vodka for more water.

You will lose the caramel flavor from the vodka, but it will still be delicious and taste like apple!

Equipment

  • 2 ounce plastic cups
  • Measuring Cups
  • Small Pot
  • Medium Bowl
  • Spoon or spatula

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup caramel vodka
  • 3.75 ounce sour apple Jello package weight (see note 1)
  • 3 cups water
  • gummy worms

Instructions

  • Put a combination of 3/4 cup water and 3/4 cup caramel vodka in the refrigerator or freezer to chill.
  • Bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
  • When boiling, add 1.5 cups worth of the boiling water to the gelatin in a medium bowl. Mix until the gelatin is completely melted, approximately 2 minutes.
  • Once melted, add the cold water and vodka mixture. Stir to combine.
  • Lay your plastic cups out on a baking sheet. Pour the gelatin mixture into each cup.
  • Place the tray in the refrigerator to chill.
  • When the gelatin has been setting for approximately 30-45 minutes and the top is just starting to set, insert a gummy worm into each shot so it looks like it is coming out of the gelatin.
  • Continue chilling until the gelatin is fully set, approximately 2 hours total.
  • Chill until ready to serve.

Notes

  1. There is a Sonic brand Sour Apple gelatin that is perfect for this recipe. It is sold in a 3.75 ounce package.
  2. If you use a different package that has a different ounce measurement, you will want to adjust all of the water and vodka accordingly. Keep the same amount of boiling water as per package directions. For the cold water, use half water and half caramel vodka for whatever it says.
  3. The parts of the worms that are in the Jello get very soft. If desired, insert the worms just before serving to keep them firmer.
  4. Because the worms get soft, these are best within 24 hours. Without the worms in them, they are best within 3 days.
