What is a Mojito?
A Mojito is a Cuban cocktail with Rum as the liquor that lets the Mint and lime shine through over the sweet rum.
It a very light a refreshing drink for summer days with many variations on the original.
Originally from Cuba, the classic mojito cocktail is made with lime, mint, and rum. Adding fun fruit flavors makes these unique! You can find more mojito cocktail recipes down below.
Ingredients
White Rum – white rum (light rum) is classic for a traditional mojito recipe. You can use spiced rum if preferred.
Watermelon Puree – I recommend a watermelon puree made from fresh watermelon as it is a great way to get the fresh watermelon flavor without the pulp. You could choose to muddle pieces of watermelon, but it will leave fruit pulp similar to an orange juice.
Fresh Mint – the fresh mint leaves are key to making an herbal cocktail! You can also save some sprigs of fresh mint for garnishing.
Fresh Lime Juice – fresh is best!!
Simple Syrup – you can use a classic simple syrup or amp up the mint flavor with our Homemade Mint Simple Syrup!
Club Soda – (soda water)
Instruction Overview
Have your ingredients and watermelon puree (or watermelon juice) ready to go!
You can build your drink either in the glass or in a cocktail shaker, if you do not want the lime and mint pieces floating around in your glass. I recommend building in your glass because it is the traditional way to do it!
Add your lime juice and mint leaves to your glass.
Use a muddler or back of a wooden spoon (the end of the handle) to press the mint into the lime juice and break it up. This releases the mint flavor and oils!
Leave everything in the glass and fill it with ice.
Add the watermelon puree, simple syrup, and then top it off with club soda. Stir to combine.
Garnish with more fresh mint leaves, a sprig of mint, and/or a slice of watermelon as desired.
The Olive Twist
You can swap in some tequila or mezcal instead of rum if you are looking to get a more margarita vibe. If you want to go even lighter you can do vodka as well.
Easily make a large batch by building in the bottom of a large pitcher. The club soda goes flat over time, so if not drinking right away it is best to top off each glass with club soda as they are served.
