What is Agua Fresca?

Aguas frescas are drinks made of blended fresh fruit or other aromatics with fresh water and a sweetener.

An agua fresca is not sweet in itself, but the sweetener balances the other flavors.

They are a popular drink in Mexico, Latin America, Central America, and the southwest United States. It is very common to find aguas frescas at street vendors in Mexico. And I have learned that street vendor food is the BEST food.

You might also hear Americans call it a “Cool Water!”

This ripe pineapple version of a flavored fresh water is a light fruity drink and a great alternative to a fruit juice (pineapple juice in this case) or flavored water.

Ingredients

Full quantities can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Here are the simple, fresh ingredients you need to make this homemade agua fresca recipe:

Pineapple – you can use either fresh ripe pineapple or frozen pineapple as either work. You can even use the cord of the fresh fruit since we are straining the final product.

Lime Juice – fresh lime juice is best!

Water

Agave – or sweetener of choice, such as honey or maple syrup. If you use granulated sugar, start with 2 tablespoons. I find that granulated sugar does not incorporate as well as the other options. The amount of sugar or sweetener will vary based on your preference, but start on the low end. If desired you can completely skip the added sugar and just use the ripe fruit for its natural sweetness.

Instruction Overview

How to make pineapple agua fresca (agua fresca de piña):

Cut up your fresh pineapple into large chunks and place in a blender or food processor with the water, lime juice, and sweetener.

Blend the pineapple water mixture on high until well blended, approximately 1-2 minutes.

Strain the agua fresca through a fine mesh strainer to remove the fruit pulp (if desired).

Serve the pineapple water over ice cubes.

Store the refreshing drink in an airtight container, large pitcher, or jug in the refrigerator.

Modifications and Substitutions

While this is an amazing non-alcoholic drink, it also makes a great cocktail! Simply add some vodka, gin, rum, or tequila.

Adjust the sweetness to your preference. I found that adding more sweetener also made the viscosity of the cucumber lime agua fresca thicker. I prefer a thinner texture, and less sugar, so test out what works for you!

If you are a fan of sweet, you can use a simple syrup. Amp up the flavor with flavored options like our Mint Simple Syrup or Jalapeno Simple Syrup if you want a kick!
